About the Artist

artist making lampwork art glass bead Muriel Johnson, the artist behind Pele Creations, is a primarily self-taught jewelry artist working out of her private studio in Keno, Oregon.  Her work has been shown extensively in northern California and southern Oregon.

Her jewelry is handcrafted using a combination of techniques including torchwork and wirework, two ancient techniques that are enjoying renewed popularity today.

Though she was always interested in art and design (she holds a degree in interior design), it was not until she made her first art glass bead in 1998 that she discovered her potential as an artist.  Torchwork beads were followed a year later with wirework (which quickly became an obsession,) as a way to show off those same beads as well as a glorious panoply of hand-selected precious and semi-precious stones. Muriel delights in the zen-like quality of torchwork and wirework - "goofs" can rarely be fully corrected in these mediums - making every piece truly unique and one-of-a-kind.

She enthusiastically pursues custom designs as she feels that her art and skill grow with each new design challenge.

The name Pele Creations is a salute to the Hawaiian Goddess of volcanoes, who has surely been creating in stone and glass longer than any of us!
